Anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) injuries are more common in sports people. It can also occur in a non sporting scenario such as road traffic accident or a simple fall down the stairs resulting in twisting injury to the knee. The primary purpose of the ACL is to keep the tibia (shin bone) from sliding forward and turning on the femur (thigh bone) in the knee joint.
ACL Insufficiency treatment varies from patient to patient . For example , in elderly, less active people , conservative (non-surgical) therapy may be sufficient. For active individuals at any age, ligament reconstruction is the only way to restore knee stability allowing them to regain their pre-injury level of function in life and in sports.
Dr.Ganesh Navaneedhan will examine the seriousness of your knee problem. A review of your medical history , as well as diagnostic tests such as MRI Scan and X-rays, may be included in this assessment.
In the early stages, the affected knee will most likely be painful, swollen, weak and restricted in movement after an ACL tear. The pain can be relieved with rest, Ice packs, Elevation, NSAIDs, and a knee cap or brace. Normally, within 7-10 days the pain and swelling resolves.
Dr.Ganesh may advise you to do some gentle stretching and strengthening before your ACL reconstruction surgery. This helps you in 2 ways: your knee heals faster after surgery because your muscles are stronger and you tend to regain your complete range of movement of the knee earlier than otherwise.
